Our Atlas Solace blend as a reed diffuser, scented with nothing but pure essential oils. There's no synthetic fragrance and nothing to light, just a gentle scent that drifts through the room on its own.

Atlas Solace is rich, woody and warm, with a touch of pink pepper. It's made for the evenings that linger, and suits autumn/winter beautifully without being a specific pumpkin or Christmas scent.

Scent Notes

Atlas Solace

Atlas cedarwood and vetiver give it a deep, earthy base, with frankincense adding a subtle, smoky warmth and patchouli and amyris rounding out the woods. Pink pepper brings a gentle spice, while juniper berry and petitgrain add a delicate lift that balances all that richness. It feels like settling into a softly lit room on a cool evening, with nowhere else you need to be.

Why essential oils

I only ever scent my diffusers with essential oils, because I want the scent doing more than smelling nice.

Scent reaches the limbic system, the part of the brain tied up with emotion and memory, before you've consciously worked out what you're smelling. I've written about why that happens here. It's also why I layer several oils into each blend rather than building around one or two notes.

How to Use

Place the reeds in the bottle and leave them for about an hour, then turn them over so the dry ends can start drawing the scent up too.

The scent builds gently over the first day or two. Turn the reeds every week or so to refresh it. Using more reeds or turning them more often gives a stronger scent, but the oil will run out sooner, so find the balance that suits your space.

When you turn the reeds, let the ends drip back into the bottle so nothing lands on your furniture, then wash your hands.

Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from radiators and draughts, as these make the oil evaporate faster.

How long it lasts

As a general guide, a 100ml diffuser lasts around 6 to 8 weeks and a 200ml around 3 to 4 months. It really depends on where it lives, though. A warm room, a sunny spot, a draught or turning the reeds often will all use it up faster, while a cooler room and fewer turns will help it last longer.

Refilling

When the bottle runs dry, pour in a refill pouch and pop the reeds back in. If you have the 100ml, pour in half and keep the rest of the pouch sealed for next time. If you're switching to a different scent, wash and dry the bottle first and use fresh reeds, as old ones hold on to the last blend.

When to replace your reeds

Over time, reeds slowly clog up with dust and dried oil. They draw less scent up the longer they're used, so you may notice the fragrance fading even when there's plenty left in the bottle. As a guide, it's worth swapping them each time you refill, or sooner if the scent drops off. If yours are still working well, there's no need to replace them yet.

Replacement reeds come in sets of 8, and you'll find them in the options at the top of this page.

Safety Information

Keep out of reach of children and pets, and always keep the bottle upright on a stable surface.

The oil can mark wood, painted surfaces, plastics and some fabrics, so stand it on a coaster or tray and wipe up any spills straight away.

Avoid contact with your eyes and skin, and wash your hands after handling the reeds. If any gets on your skin, wash it off with soap and water. If it gets in your eyes, rinse them carefully with water for several minutes, and get medical advice if the irritation doesn't settle. Not to be swallowed.

Keep away from naked flames, and never light the reeds.

Allergens

Essential oils contain naturally occurring allergens, and this diffuser declares Atlas cedarwood oil, with beta-caryophyllene, limonene, linalool, linalyl acetate, alpha-phellandrene, alpha-pinene and beta-pinene also present. If you know you react to any of those, this one may not suit you. Here's exactly how I handle allergens and why I keep levels low.

Warning: May cause an allergic skin reaction. Causes serious eye irritation. Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects. Contains Cedrus Atlantica Bark Oil.
