Why I Created a Botanical Perfume Oil Instead of a Traditional Spray Perfume

Why I Created a Botanical Perfume Oil Instead of a Traditional Spray Perfume

Why I Created a Botanical Perfume Oil Instead of a Traditional Spray Perfume

There was never a plan to create a perfume just because it seemed like the next product to launch.

If Bloom Skin was ever going to create a fragrance, it had to feel like a natural extension of everything the brand already stood for.

Simple ingredients.

Intentional rituals.

Products that encourage you to slow down, even if it's only for a few moments each day.

As a registered nurse and someone who has always lived with incredibly sensitive skin, I've spent years looking beyond marketing claims and paying closer attention to ingredients, formulation and how products actually feel on the skin.

That curiosity naturally carried over into fragrance.

Rather than creating an alcohol-based spray perfume, I found myself drawn towards botanical perfume oils.

Not because I believe they're the right choice for everyone, but because they were the right choice for me, and for the experience I wanted Bloom Skin to offer.

More Than Just A Fragrance

When people think about perfume, they often think about one question first.

"How long does it last?"

It's understandable.

For decades we've been told that longer-lasting automatically means better.

But somewhere along the way I found myself asking a different question.

How does it make you feel when you wear it?

That question changed everything.

Because I realised I wasn't trying to create the loudest fragrance.

I wasn't trying to create the perfume that would fill a room.

I wanted to create something far more personal.

Something that sits close to the skin.

Something you discover throughout the day rather than announce from across it.

Something that quietly becomes part of your daily routine.

Why I Chose a Botanical Perfume Oil

One of the biggest differences between a perfume oil and a traditional spray perfume is the base itself.

Most conventional perfumes use alcohol as their carrier.

Perfume oils, like those I create at Bloom Skin, use nourishing plant oils instead.

For my collection, I chose jojoba oil.

Jojoba has long been appreciated in skincare for its lightweight feel, beautiful glide and compatibility with the skin.

It allows the fragrance to be applied directly onto pulse points while leaving the skin feeling comfortable rather than dry.

For me, it simply felt like a more natural extension of everything Bloom Skin already creates.

After all, skincare and fragrance don't have to live separately.

They can complement one another beautifully.

Why It Doesn't Last All Day... And Why That's Intentional

One of the questions I'm asked most often is whether a botanical perfume oil lasts as long as a traditional spray perfume.

The honest answer?

Usually not.

And I never wanted it to.

We've become so used to expecting fragrance to last from the moment we leave the house until we go to bed.

But I started wondering...

Why?

Fragrance has become something we apply once before rushing out of the door.

For me, that's missing one of its greatest pleasures.

I wanted fragrance to become a pause.

A moment to roll a little perfume onto my wrists.

To take a deep breath.

To notice the scent.

To enjoy it.

Then later in the day...

To come back to it again.

Every application becomes a small ritual rather than another task to tick off.

Because botanical perfume oils continue to evolve on the skin, reapplying isn't simply replacing a fragrance that's disappeared.

It's experiencing the opening notes all over again.

The brighter citrus notes greet you once more.

The florals begin to unfold.

Eventually the warmer, grounding notes remain quietly in the background.

It's a completely different experience to wearing one fragrance that remains unchanged for hours.

And perhaps that's exactly why I love it.

I wasn't trying to create the perfume that lasts the longest.

I wanted to create the perfume you'd genuinely look forward to wearing again.

Fragrance Is More Personal Than We Realise

One of the things I find most fascinating is how deeply connected fragrance is with memory.

A single scent can instantly remind us of a person.

A place.

A season.

Or a moment we'd completely forgotten.

Research has shown that our sense of smell has particularly close links with the parts of the brain involved in memory and emotion, which may explain why certain fragrances can feel so evocative.

That's one of the reasons I believe choosing a fragrance should be about far more than simply following trends.

The scent you wear often becomes part of your own story.

Why Perfume Smells Different on Everyone

Have you ever noticed that a fragrance you absolutely love on someone else smells slightly different when you wear it yourself?

You're not imagining it.

No two people wear a fragrance in exactly the same way.

Our skin is incredibly individual. Factors such as skin temperature, natural skin oils, the products you've already applied and even the environment around you can all influence how a fragrance develops over time.

This is one of the reasons I love botanical perfume oils so much.

They don't feel static.

Instead, they evolve alongside you.

The fresh citrus notes you notice first may gradually soften into delicate florals before the warmer woods and resins begin to take centre stage.

It's almost like listening to different chapters of the same story.

That means your experience of a fragrance won't necessarily be the same as someone else's—and I think that's part of the beauty of it.

The Beauty of a Simpler Formula

As both a nurse and a skincare formulator, I've always found myself reading ingredient lists.

Not because every long ingredient list is bad, but because I genuinely like understanding what I'm putting onto my skin.

When I created Bloom Skin's botanical perfume oils, I wanted that same sense of simplicity.

Each perfume is blended using carefully selected botanical essential oils in a nourishing jojoba oil base, rather than building a long list of unnecessary ingredients simply for the sake of it.

For me, that transparency matters.

You can look at the ingredient list and recognise what you're applying.

That doesn't mean every botanical ingredient will suit every person—essential oils are naturally occurring complex mixtures and, like any fragranced cosmetic, they can still cause irritation in some individuals.

That's why I always recommend patch testing any new skincare or fragrance before regular use, especially if you have sensitive skin.

I believe it's important to be honest about that.

Natural doesn't automatically mean suitable for everyone, just as synthetic doesn't automatically mean unsuitable.

What matters most is thoughtful formulation, quality ingredients and choosing products that work for your own skin and preferences.

Small Batches, Made by Hand

Every bottle of Bloom Skin botanical perfume oil is blended by hand here in Gloucestershire.

That means every stage—from weighing and blending to bottling and labelling—is completed in small batches rather than on a production line.

It's certainly not the quickest way to make perfume.

But it allows me to stay closely connected to every bottle that leaves my workspace.

One of the things I love most about running a small business is that nothing feels anonymous.

Every order is packed by hand.

Every label is applied individually.

Every fragrance has been blended with care rather than simply manufactured.

For me, that's something worth preserving.

Four Fragrances. Four Different Personalities.

Rather than creating dozens of fragrances, I wanted to create a small collection where every blend had its own identity.

Aroha Glow

Warm, uplifting like sunshine bottled..

A fragrance that feels like golden evening light, gentle confidence and slowing down after a busy day.

Ideal if you're naturally drawn to warm sweet sun kissed with a comforting finish.

Brise Lift

Fresh, bright and quietly energising.

This blend feels clean and uplifting without becoming overpowering.

Perfect for those who enjoy lighter citrus-inspired fragrances with botanical depth.

Serein Calm

Gentle, peaceful and beautifully comforting.

Created for moments when you simply want to pause, breathe deeply and enjoy a little stillness.

Soft floral notes combine with calming botanicals to create one of the most relaxing blends in the collection.

Umber Ground

Rich, earthy and beautifully balanced.

Warm woods, resins and grounding botanicals come together to create a fragrance that feels quietly confident and effortlessly timeless.

If you usually gravitate towards deeper, more sophisticated fragrances, Umber Ground may be the perfect place to start.

A Different Way of Wearing Fragrance

One of the lovely things about perfume oils is that they naturally encourage you to slow down.

Instead of reaching for a spray as you're rushing out of the door, applying a perfume oil feels far more intentional.

Rolling the fragrance onto your wrists or neck takes only a few seconds.

But somehow, those few seconds feel different.

You notice the fragrance.

You pause.

You breathe.

Then you carry on with your day.

That tiny ritual is something I never expected to become my favourite part of wearing fragrance.

Now, I genuinely look forward to it.

And perhaps that's what Bloom Skin has always been about.

Not adding more steps to your routine...

But helping the ones you already have feel a little more meaningful.

How to Get the Most from Your Botanical Perfume Oil

Like skincare, there's no right or wrong way to wear a fragrance. Part of the beauty of a perfume oil is discovering how it works best for you.

Here are a few simple tips that I personally love:

Apply to Pulse Points

The warmth of your skin helps the fragrance develop naturally throughout the day.

Try applying your perfume oil to:

  • Wrists
  • Neck
  • Behind the ears
  • Inner elbows

There's no need to use a large amount. A few gentle strokes of the rollerball are usually enough.

Reapply Whenever It Feels Right

One of the questions I hear most often is:

"How many times should I reapply?"

The answer is simply... whenever you want to.

Unlike a fragrance designed to last all day from one application, I see reapplying as part of the experience.

Perhaps before you leave the house.

Before an evening meal.

Before meeting friends.

Or simply because you fancy taking thirty seconds for yourself.

Those little moments become part of the ritual.

Layer With Your Skincare

Because the perfumes are carried in jojoba oil, they fit beautifully alongside a simple skincare routine.

Many people find they enjoy applying their fragrance after moisturising or after using one of their favourite Bloom Skin balms, allowing fragrance to become the final, mindful step in their routine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are botanical perfume oils suitable for sensitive skin?

Everyone's skin is different, and no fragranced cosmetic can be guaranteed suitable for every individual.

Although these perfumes are made with carefully selected botanical ingredients in a jojoba oil base, essential oils are naturally complex and can still cause irritation or allergic reactions in some people.

If you have particularly sensitive skin or known fragrance allergies, I always recommend carrying out a patch test before regular use.

Do perfume oils last as long as spray perfumes?

Usually, no—and that's completely intentional.

Rather than focusing on maximum longevity, Bloom Skin's perfume oils are designed to offer a slower, more personal fragrance experience that you can return to throughout the day.

Many people enjoy the ritual of reapplying and rediscovering how the fragrance unfolds.

Will the fragrance smell the same on everyone?

Not necessarily.

Fragrance develops slightly differently on every person due to individual skin chemistry, skin temperature and the products already on the skin.

That's one of the reasons perfume feels so personal.

Why did you choose jojoba oil?

Jojoba oil has a beautifully lightweight feel and is widely used in skincare because it spreads easily across the skin without feeling overly heavy.

For me, it created the perfect base for a perfume oil that feels comfortable to wear every day.

Final Thoughts

When I first imagined creating a fragrance collection, I never wanted to compete with the biggest perfume houses.

I simply wanted to create something that felt like Bloom Skin.

Simple.

Thoughtfully made.

Inspired by botanicals.

And designed to become part of everyday life.

If these perfume oils encourage someone to pause for a moment, take a deep breath and enjoy a small ritual in an otherwise busy day, then they've done exactly what I hoped they would.

Thank you for taking the time to read a little of the story behind them.

I hope you enjoy wearing them as much as I've enjoyed creating them.
